2014 Goodman Wines Cabernet Sauvignon
Yarra Valley

I know cabernet sauvignon isn't fashionable but I do love Yarra Valley Cabernet.

Grown by Kevin Ryan on his Yering Grange vineyard in Yering. This is a tough growing site, perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon vines. After three weeks on skins the wine is matured in French oak barriques for 12 months

Medium bodied and refreshing in style this is a classic Yarra Valley cabernet sauvignon.

Blackcurrant and violet aromas dominate the nose with the subtle undertones of French oak. The palate is long, the tannins fine and grainy. A wine that has many years ahead of it.

Goodman Wines Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

A pleasure to drink. Gorgeous Cabernet from the Yarra Valley - a variety from the region which very much sits in the shadows of Chardonnay and Pinot.

Gorgeous aromas of blackberry jam - and a generous spread of it too. Blackcurrant is prominent too. Sift around a little more to find violets and a touch of mint all slowly unfurling. Stunning medium-bodied fruit, it oozes freshness with a sexy swagger.

250 dozen produced.

Drink this with plentiful pours now to eight years.

Goodman Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Classic Yarra Valley Cabernet. There’s a timelessness to this mode of red, even if it’s slightly uncool in the modern riper Cab world. Cassis, pencils shavings, a vegetal hint and backed by a curranty punch. An understated and classy palate that sits on the edge of ‘just-right’ ripeness, though not for everyone. Fine tannins too. Maybe a little underweight? Will live and provide ‘luncheon claret’ drinking for years. Best drinking: Now to whenever. Will still be chugging along in 15 years time.

17.5/20, 91/100+. 13%, $40. Would I buy it? A glass or two.

Yarra Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Medium weight cabernet of fine feel, succulence, building tannin profile and glorious perfume. Feels tightly wound, quiet in its fruit and winemaking expression. Built for a longer haul or at least good time in a decanter. Expect cassis, leafy-briary notes and some flintly-mineral suggestions.

Super release. 13.0%, 94/100.

A light garnet colour. Lovely aromas of earthy dark chocolate, black fruits: currants and berries. Some bramble and funky meaty, leather savoury qualities push the intrigue. Stately, yet understated with black currant and a dark bramble. Sits on the lighter end of the spectrum for cabernet with a  rose water sweetness hint to the dark chocolate and grainy tannins. RRP: $40 Alc: 13% Rating: 17.5/20
