2015 Goodman Wines Pinot Noir
Yarra Valley

The high elevation and red volcanic soils of the Willowlake Vineyard in the Yarra Valley makes this a site I am lucky to access for both my chardonnay and pinot noir wines.

The fruit is hand harvested and distributed into large open fermenters. I keep about 30% of the fruit in whole bunches and de-stem the rest. A seven day cold soak preceded fermentation. After 18 days on skins I pressed the wine to French oak for maturation.

The nose is delicate yet complex.  Perfumed with red fruit, flowers and forest undergrowth, the palate has great length and structure form the careful use of stalks, finishing with a silky texture and fine tannins.

Goodman Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2015

There’s a great freshness to this new range of wines from Kate Goodman. Understatement, low alcohol, purity. They’re Yarra wines of old, but not fusty. Just elegant.

This Pinot is the standout of the range. Sourced from the Willowlake Vineyard, which provides fruit for at least a thousand small winemakers, this includes 30% whole bunches in the blend, and matured in 20% new oak. There’s that easy ripe raspberry fruit character that is the trademark of ’15 Yarra Pinots, with a dash of woody whole bunch, the (natural) acidity just helping give this even more tang, more life. That balance between ripe fruit and a hint of spice makes this light to mid weight style appeal, the limpid pure fruit not too light, not too heavy. Perfect.

A style that will be a rewarding drink at every turn. Maybe it could have just a little more weight, but otherwise it’s a winner.

Best drinking: Now to six years easy. 18/20, 93/100. 13%, $40. Would I buy it? I think I would. $40 is fair.

Goodman Wines Pinot Noir 2015

I’ve been privileged to have a look at a number of wines by Kate Goodman of late - both her own label and her deeds for others. This Yarra Pinot is singing, more bass than pretty vocals mind you. Tap your foot to this beat.

A whiff of strawberries, sauteed mushrooms, some earthiness plus a kick of forest floor. Sour cherries and dried purple flowers wade through effortlessly finishing with a slight citrusy tang. A his and hers type Pinot - some masculine attributes along with pretty femininity. It’s hard to resist going back for more - quite evocative in many ways. Killer Pinot.

Drink now to 2025.
